Aliens
An extraterrestrial life-form, possibly intelligent and/or extremely threatening. Aliens come in all shapes and sizes: They may be ethereal beings as in "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within", quite humanoid as most of the female space-faring cast in "Tenchi Muyou! GXP", or totally incomprehensible as in "Gantz". Not the sky is the limit, but the anime author`s imagination.
Catgirls
Catgirls, or nekomimi (猫耳) literally meaning "cat ears", are girls that have various feline features for added moe or sexiness. In anime, cat ears and a tail are fairly common, while other features are less common. Nya~, the Japanese equivalent of meow, is often used by girls acting cute and is not a trait exclusive to catgirls.
Ecchi
Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning "indecent", "lewd", "frisky" or "sexy", while its usage can be compared to the word "naughty". The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent.
Harem
Harem anime is when three or more females that for some reason are in the presence of one male as a central plot element. Generally, both the girls` looks and personalities vary a lot, and most of them are interested in the one guy. Sometimes, none of the girls are really interested at first, so the protagonist has to build relationships with them. Ecchi pretty much can`t be avoided, and it`s typical to see the protagonist stamped as a pervert by some of the girls, whether he is one or not. A lot of harem anime were originally Visual Novels, since most Visual Novels revolve around controlling this one guy, trying to build a relationship with several girls.
In a story where there is one female and several good looking males it`s a "reverse harem" or "male harem".
Juujin
Juujin are characters that are otherwise human, but have some animal characteristics, like animal ears and/or a tail. The most well known type is a cat girl, but there are also cat boys, dog girls/boys, fox girls/boys etc. This category should not be confused with furry fandom or with anthropomorphic character types in general, as those are animals with human characteristics.
This category isn`t restricted to ecchi and hentai shows.
Large Breasts
Focus on larger than average breasts. Pretty common in anime. Usually involves adolescent girls or fully grown women.
Mecha
Mecha in Japanese basically means mechanical things; everything from an electric whisk or a car to a spaceship or a robot. Here however we limit it to the more exotic things usually referred to as mecha anime: robots, whether controlled by a human or not, and their ilk.
Original Work: Novel
Note that novel means book with words in paper, so no comics and no "visual novels", which should go under manga and dating-sim - visual Novel/erotic game respectively.
Note that it can be applied to novels as we know them but also the typical light novels for teens and young adults, which are common in Japan and aside from being short include a number of illustrations.
Pantsu
"Panties" in Japanese. Upskirt views in various positions are typical, however all forms of partial or fully exposed panties are accepted. Exposure is usually accidental, but may also be deliberate. Pantsu views may be exclusive to the viewer without impacting any characters. Bikinis are not pantsu.
Robot Helpers
Any protagonist of repute in a SciFi setting requires a side-kick (also for comic relief at times). Whereas other anime will have a cute animal side-kick, in SciFi the corresponding equivalent is the Robot Helper. A mechanized AI (artificial intelligence) that assists the character in tricky situations.
SciFi
Science fiction stories usually focus on how situations could be different in the future when we are more technologically advanced; due to either our own achievements or having met with other civilizations whom we have learned from.
Seinen
A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s.
